Team North America defeated Team Finland 4-1 in a World Cup of Hockey 2016 preliminary-round game at Air Canada Centre on Sunday. Team North America is 1-0-0 in Group B play. Team Finland is 0-1-0.
Here are the three stars of the game as selected by members of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 Organizing Committee:
3rd Star: Connor McDavid, F, Team North America
ASSIST, 3 SOG, 14:44 TOI
The No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft started the play that got Team North America its first goal. Coming down the down center of the ice, McDavid backhanded the puck to Auston Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Matthews slipped by Team Finland defensemen Rasmus Ristolainen, went to the net and took a shot on Team Finland goalie Pekka Rinne, who made the save, but couldn't stop Jack Eichel, the No. 2 pick in the 2015 Draft, from scoring.
2nd Star: Nathan MacKinnon, F, Team North America
GOAL, 3 SOG, 2 HITS, 14:39 TOI
A physical presence all game, MacKinnon capped a three-goal second period when he picked up a rebound of a Colton Parayko shot in front of the net and put it past Rinne.
1st Star: Colton Parayko, D, Team North America
2 ASSISTS, 3 SHOTS, 3 HITS, PLUS-2 RATING, 17:09 TOI
As if Team North America doesn't have enough offensive firepower up front, the defenseman had two assists. Parayko assisted on Johnny Gaudreau's goal 5:27 into the second period when he gloved down the puck and shot it on net. Gaudreau re-directed it past Rinne, but said he was trying to get out of the way. "Parayko has a bomb," Gaudreau said. "I didn't want it to hit me."
