Team Canada defeated Team Russia 5-3 on Saturday in the first semifinal of the World Cup of Hockey 2016. Team Canada will play the winner of the semifinal Sunday between Team Sweden and Team Europe (1 p.m. ET; ESPN, CBC, TVA Sports) in the best-of-3 final.
Here are the three stars of the game as selected by members of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 Organizing Committee:
3rd Star - John Tavares, F, Team Canada
GOAL, 5 SHOTS, 15:51 TOI
Made it 5-2 at 9:22 of the third period when he beat goalie Sergei Bobrovsky high to the glove side. Could have had multiple assists if not for the stellar play by Bobrovsky through the first two periods.
2nd Star - Sidney Crosby, F, Team Canada
GOAL, 2 ASSISTS, 4 SHOTS, 16:43 TOI
Opened the scoring at 7:40 of the first period when he stole the puck from Team Russia defenseman Dmitry Kulikov and beat Bobrovsky with a slick backhand. Assisted on each of Brad Marchand's two goals, including a gorgeous pass to set up the game-tying goal at 17:36 of the second. "It was big. We felt like we were controlling the play, but we were down 2-1," Crosby said. "It was nice to get that. It was a huge goal."
1st Star - Brad Marchand, F, Team Canada
2 GOALS, 6 SHOTS, 15:37 TOI
Beat Bobrovsky to the glove side at 1:16 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and seemingly Team Russia's spirit. "Any time you play in a game of this magnitude, and you win, it's an unbelievable feeling," Marchand said.
