Team Sweden defeated Team Russia, 2-1 in its World Cup of Hockey 2016 preliminary game at Air Canada Centre on Sunday. Team Sweden is 1-0 in Group B play. Team Russia is 0-1.

3rd Star: Gabriel Landeskog, F, Team Sweden

Landeskog gave Team Sweden a 1-0 lead at 10:41 of the second period. At the start of a power play, center Nicklas Backstrom won the faceoff back to defenseman Erik Karlsson, who set up of Landeskog for a one-time blast over the blocker of Team Russia goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
2nd Star: Jacob Markstrom, G, Team Sweden
With No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist sitting out due to illness, Markstrom stepped in and gave Team Sweden just what it needed - barely. He made 27 saves, his biggest in the final seconds when he stopped a slap shot by forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the point. Alex Ovechkin appeared to score off the rebound, but the goal was waved off since he batted it in with his hand.
1st Star: Victor Hedman, D, Team Sweden
GOAL, 2 SHOTS, BLOCK, 22:54 TOI
Team Sweden needed a solid defensive effort and Hedman led the way with a team-high 22:54 of ice time. He also scored the game-winning goal, taking a pass in the slot from Carl Hagelin and beating Bobrovsky at 12:52 of the second period.
"Hedman is a horse, you saw it today," Team Sweden coach Rikard Gronborg said. "He played all kinds of difficult situations. Now I know why he's so highly regarded I knew that before, but now he's proven to everyone back at home in Sweden that this is how good he is. It was nice for me to see Victor have that kind of a game."
