Phil Kessel: Tweet not directed at Team USA players

Penguins forward was among players not selected for World Cup

by Wes Crosby / NHL.com Correspondent

CRANBERRY, Pa . -- Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel said Friday he meant "no disrespect to any of the players" in a tweet that seemed critical of Team USA's performance in the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

Following Team USA's 4-2 loss to Team Canada on Tuesday that eliminated it from the World Cup with one preliminary game remaining, Kessel sent a tweet seemingly in reference to being left off its roster.

Team USA players accept blame for winless World Cup

Coach John Tortorella says team had chances, just couldn't finish

by Tim Campbell @TimNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Team USA's World Cup of Hockey 2016 burned to the ground in six short days, losers of all three games in the preliminary round.

Even after losing 4-3 to Team Czech Republic and hearing some boos as it skated off the Air Canada Centre ice Thursday, there were no recriminations or finger-pointing from Team USA about its 0-3-0 record.

Team USA's World Cup plan not good enough

Formula that won Stanley Cup twice for GM Dean Lombardi fails in best-on-best tournament

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @Cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- Let's describe what happened through the eyes of Team USA general manager Dean Lombardi, who spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since Team USA was eliminated from the World Cup of Hockey 2016, and let's break it down.

Let's start with the end goal: It was to win the tournament. That sounds obvious, but think about it. The World Cup is not the Olympics. There is no silver medal. There is no bronze medal. There is no prize for coming close.

John Tortorella criticizes tweets from U.S. alumni

Team USA coach says comments from Phil Kessel, others 'a little self-serving'

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- Team USA coach John Tortorella called comments by Phil Kessel and former U.S. players "self-serving," and said they did not reflect well on them or USA Hockey.

Team USA has been taking heat for its performance at the World Cup of Hockey 2016. It was eliminated after losing its first two preliminary-round games -- 3-0 against Team Europe and 4-2 against Team Canada -- and will play for pride against Team Czech Republic on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, TVA Sports).

"We need to take our medicine as a team," Tortorella said after the morning skate Thursday. "I just don't … I don't get … We'll take it from you guys [media] all day long. That's part of our job, and it's part of your job. All day long. And we should. I just don't understand players that have been in this situation, players that have played for USA Hockey, not only Phil, but some of the other guys speaking out.

Team Czech Republic doesn't want to leave without win

Focused on defeating Team USA despite having been eliminated

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

TORONTO -- Team Czech Republic has one goal remaining in the World Cup of Hockey 2016: It wants to leave with a victory.

To do that, it will have to defeat Team USA in a Group A game at Air Canada Centre on Thursday (3 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, TVA Sports). Like Team Czech Republic (0-2-0), Team USA has not won a game in the tournament.

Team Czech Republic played twice in the first three days of the World Cup, losing 6-0 to Team Canada in its first game Saturday and 3-2 in overtime to Team Europe two days later.

Team USA players unhappy with Phil Kessel tweet

Forward posted to social media after loss to Team Canada

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- Team USA players did not appreciate a tweet Phil Kessel posted Tuesday after a 4-2 loss to Team Canada eliminated them from the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

Kessel played for the United States at the past two Olympics and led the 2014 Sochi Games in scoring with eight points in six games. But general manager Dean Lombardi did not select him for Team USA for the World Cup, and he is recovering from July surgery for a hand injury.

Team USA has plenty to think about after elimination

Players say overlooking Team Europe in first World Cup game cost chance at semifinals

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- It didn't work. Team USA came to the World Cup of Hockey 2016 planning to win with grit. It was eliminated after losing its first two preliminary-round games by a combined score of 7-2.

But the players aren't ready to concede the roster and the style were the problem. They felt they had enough talent to win and the problem was that they didn't play the way they set out to play.
