Team USA loses finale to Team Czech Republic

Leaves World Cup without a win in three preliminary-round games

by Arpon Basu @ArponBasu / LNH.com Senior Managing Editor

TORONTO -- Team USA is leaving the World Cup of Hockey 2016 without a victory after losing to Team Czech Republic 4-3 in the final preliminary-round game at Air Canada Centre on Thursday.

"None of us with the U.S. team here from head to toe is happy with what's happened here," Team USA coach John Tortorella said. "But I thought our guys rallied together here a little bit, and that's what we talked about, as far as all the things going around the team and the organization of USA Hockey, let's just try to play a game for ourselves.

Team Czech Republic doesn't want to leave without win

Focused on defeating Team USA despite having been eliminated

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

TORONTO -- Team Czech Republic has one goal remaining in the World Cup of Hockey 2016: It wants to leave with a victory.

To do that, it will have to defeat Team USA in a Group A game at Air Canada Centre on Thursday (3 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, TVA Sports). Like Team Czech Republic (0-2-0), Team USA has not won a game in the tournament.

Team Czech Republic played twice in the first three days of the World Cup, losing 6-0 to Team Canada in its first game Saturday and 3-2 in overtime to Team Europe two days later.

Team Czech Republic positive despite tough stretch

Long shot to make World Cup semifinals, assistant coach Vinny Prospal says country still playing for pride

by Tom Gulitti @TomGulittiNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Team Czech Republic assistant coach Vinny Prospal plans to be at Air Canada Centre to root for Team USA in its World Cup of Hockey 2016 preliminary round game against Team Canada on Tuesday.

Prospal played for Team USA coach John Tortorella and assistant Mike Sullivan with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers, so that has a little to do with his interest, but it's mostly about Team Czech needing help to stay alive in the World Cup. If Team Canada loses to Team USA on Tuesday and to Team Europe on Wednesday, Team Czech Republic will have a chance to reach the semifinals with a win over Team USA on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, TVA Sports).

Team Czech Republic needs lots of help, luck

Overtime loss to Team Europe makes advancing to World Cup semifinal unlikely

by Dave Stubbs @Dave_Stubbs / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- "In overtime, it's just a casino," Jakub Voracek was saying. "It's a roulette."

So now it's up to Lady Luck if Team Czech Republic is going to advance past the round-robin of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 after it lost 3-2 in overtime to Team Europe on Monday.

Voracek and his teammates knew the harsh reality going into the matinee game against the terrific hybrid group that would become the first team in this tournament with two wins beside its name.

Team Czech Republic knows it can be better

Faces must-win situation against Team Europe after loss to Team Canada

by Amalie Benjamin @AmalieBenjamin / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Team Czech Republic had known that it would not be favored against Team Canada in its opening game in the World Cup of Hockey 2016. The team knew that it was a longshot to win, that it would probably not do so in the end. And, though the players did want to come out on top of course, they thought they would have accepted a certain type of loss.

That was not the type of loss they suffered.
