Brad Marchand's play isn't surprising to Team Canada

After two-goal game, forward is second in World Cup scoring behind Sidney Crosby

by Arpon Basu @ArponBasu / LNH.com Senior Managing Editor

TORONTO -- Team Russia coach Oleg Znarok was asked why Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby and his line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand had so much success in a 5-3 win against his team in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 semifinal on Saturday.

Znarok's initial response was to laugh because the question, after watching what Crosby's line had done to his team, might have appeared somewhat ridiculous to him.

"Because they're incredible players," Znarok said, once he was finished laughing.

Simple enough.

Team Russia laments loss to Team Canada

After leading World Cup semifinal, gives up four goals in row

by Tom Gulitti @TomGulittiNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Through two periods of its World Cup of Hockey 2016 semifinal against Team Canada on Saturday, Team Russia believed it could win.

Despite being outshot 33-15 at that point, the game was tied, mostly because of the goaltending of Sergei Bobrovsky, and Team Russia was in position to pull off an upset.

But it all unraveled in the third period, and Team Canada pulled away for a 5-3 victory at Air Canada Centre, leaving Team Russia in a familiar position.

No worries for Team Canada

Shrugs off setback in second period, defeats Team Russia to reach World Cup final

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- Before the semifinals of the World Cup of Hockey 2016, Team Canada coach Mike Babcock seemed excited for a test. His players had won their three preliminary-round games by a combined score of 14-3. They were about to face Team Russia, a team with elite scorers and an elite goaltender, in a single-elimination scenario.

"Everybody likes to be in the 50-50 situation when you're good at what you do, because that's where the fun's at, because that's where the anxiety is," Babcock said. "That's why you're in the game. If it's an 80-20 thing, that's boring."

Alex Ovechkin thwarted by Team Canada

Jonathan Toews, Shea Weber among group to help shut down Team Russia forward

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

TORONTO -- No time. No space. No possession.

Want to shut down Alex Ovechkin and whoever he plays with? Those are the three principles, the keys to live by.

Team Canada lived like kings in its 5-3 win against Team Russia in the semifinal of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

Team Canada's so-called checking line of Jonathan Toews, Logan Couture and Corey Perry with the shutdown defense pair of Shea Weber and Marc-Edouard Vlasic were tasked with following Ovechkin over the boards whenever possible. They never let him even sniff a scoring chance because they shut down his linemates and stopped them from getting the puck to him.

Sergei Bobrovsky does his part, gets little help

Team Russia goalie makes 42 saves in loss to Team Canada at World Cup semifinal

by Tim Campbell @TimNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Sergei Bobrovsky made Team Canada and an entire country of hockey fans sweat on Saturday.

The Team Russia goalie could do no more than that. His courageous effort had his team ahead by a goal late in the second period, but his 42 saves in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 semifinal at Air Canada Centre weren't enough in a 5-3 loss to Team Canada, which advanced to the tournament's best-of-3 final.

Team Canada defeats Team Russia to reach final

Will play Team Europe or Team Sweden to decide World Cup champion

by Shawn P. Roarke @SRoarke_NHL / NHL.com Director of Editorial

TORONTO -- Sidney Crosby propelled Team Canada into the final of the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

Crosby scored once and set up two goals by Brad Marchand, the second putting Team Canada ahead for good in a 5-3 win against Team Russia at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

"I think that's one thing that makes him such a good player, his determination, and he always comes up big in the big games," Marchand said of Crosby. "You see plays like that, that's where the leadership comes in. And when you're able to lead at this level, of a group of leaders, then you're able to take control, that just shows how special of a player he is, and he created that whole goal, and ultimately that did lead to turning the game around."

Hall of Famer takes in World Cup semifinal with Fantasy Camp invitees

by Dave Stubbs @Dave_Stubbs / NHL.com Columnist

TORONTO -- This is how times change:

On Saturday, in the electrically charged atmosphere of Air Canada Centre, Phil Esposito was entertaining a healthy number of those who were in town to take part in his four-day Fantasy Camp.

At least a dozen of the 18 or so in his private suite for the World Cup of Hockey 2016 semifinal were Russian.

Honest, they were.
